What’s Happening: Messenger Apps and Mobile Payments

Based on current trends, it seems like interacting with your crush (even if only virtually) is quickly supplanting following their every move on social media.

The use of messaging apps has increased rapidly within the last year and is catching up to the use of social networks. This week, Business Insider reported that the top seven messaging apps added 900 million users to grow by 148 percent between 2013 and 2014. Messaging apps are likely to surpass social networks in the number of users sometime later this year.

Business Insider compared the growth between four messaging apps (WeChat, WhatsApp, LINE, and Facebook Messenger) and four global social networks (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn).

WhatsApp quickly passed its competitors in mid-2013, and by the beginning of this year, it had 100 million more monthly active users than the second-biggest app. While Facebook is still a powerful social media company, its messaging service is lagging behind the top three messaging apps, despite its global footprint and deep integration with the Facebook platform.
